Ecco le mie più certe predizioni per il 2012, così che non entriate nel nuovo anno completamente impreparati. A differenza di altri siti di pronostici, queste previsioni sono basate sulla Scienza!

1. Oggetti in caduta libera accelereranno verso il suolo a un tasso approssimativamente costante, fino al limite imposto dalla resistenza dell'aria.
2. Di tutti i nuclei di Radio 226 disponibili sulla Terra oggi, lo 0.04% decadrà entro fine anno.
3. Una linea tracciata tra ogni pianeta (o anche pianetino) e il Sole spazzerà aree eguali in tempi uguali.
4. Gli uragani nell'emisfero nord ruoteranno in senso antiorario se osservati dall'alto.
5. La pressione di un gas compresso in un pistone salirà in modo inversamente proporzionale al cambiamento di volume.
6. Cariche elettriche in moto genereranno campi magnetici.
7. L'energia di un oggetto fermo calerà se cala la massa, e il cambiamento sarà pari alla massa per il quadrato della velocità della luce nel vuoto.
8. Il patrimonio genetico del mondo evolverà gradualmente in modi determinati dall'adattamento a un certo ambiente, selezione sessuale e casualità.
9. L'entropia dei sistemi chiusi crescerà.
10. La gente farà molte cose stupide e alcune sorprendentemente molto intelligenti.

C'è un aneddoto a proposito dell'astronomo Jaques Babibet e la Grande Cometa del 1861, raccontato da lui stesso. Una signora chiede all'astronomo:
S: Signore, i giornali dicono che abbiamo una cometa.
B: Sì, signora, una cometa bellissima; nella storia dell'astronomia non ve ne fu una più bella.
S: Che cosa predice la cometa?
B: Assolutamente nulla, signora.
S: Ed è bello?
B: Splendido, signora; e, se solo volete uscire in giardino, la potrete vedere.
S: Ah! Se non può fare né bene né male, non vale la pena di incomodarsi.
E, detto questo, la signora va a dormire.
Continua Babinet, "Mi si dirà: a che serve l'astronomia? Rispondo: serve a far sì che nel 1861 si possa andare a dormire senza timore, anche quando nel cielo vi è una splendida cometa. Non era così seicento o trecento anni fa."

There is an anecdote about the astronomer Jacques Babinet and the Great Comet of 1861, said by he himself. A lady asks to the astronomer:

L: What does the comet predict?
B: Absolutely nothing, madam.
L: And is this beautiful?
B: It is wonderful, madam; and, if you just go in the garden, you can watch it.
L: Ah, if it can do neither good nor bad, there is no need to bother ourselves.
After having said this, the lady goes to bed.

Il medico ribatte: - No, è meglio avere una moglie. il senso di sicurezza che ti dà il matrimonio diminuisce lo stress e migliora la tua salute. Un'amante ti fa stare sempre in ansia, e quindi rischi maggiormente un infarto!
Infine il matematico chiude: - Sbagliate entrambi. E meglio averle tutt'e due: così quando la moglie pensa che tu sei con l'amante, e l'amante pensa che sei con la moglie, puoi fare un po' di matematica in santa pace!

Nel comunicato stampa in cui il Ministro Gelmini si congratula per la scoperta (?) della Collaborazione OPERA, compare un clamoroso blob: si parla di un tunnel costruito tra il CERN e i laboratori del Gran Sasso (730 km!) a cui avrebbe contribuito il Ministero con ben 45 milioni di euro! I casi sono due: o il Ministro non sa dove vanno a finire i soldi della ricerca o è meglio che cambi al più presto l'Ufficio Stampa!

Nota: bisognerebbe poi spiegare all'Ufficio Stampa che dopo una perla simile è meglio evitare rettifiche (vedi Corsera) che peggiorano la situazione e abbozzare. Errare è umano, ma perseverare è diabolico...
